As another year comes to a close, Carolina Public Press looks back at the top stories of the past 12 months.
Over the years, CPP has seen powerful stories impacting just about everything, including the coronavirus, civil unrest, and the 2020 election. Years of continuous reporting on child protective services, troubled prisons, the effects of climate change, forest planning, and more.
This year wasn't that kind of year. Some of these big stories have come to light. Issues that we have always pursued, such as voter access and forest planning, were very important. However, 2023 was a year of change, and various news attracted attention.
Below we will analyze the top six stories of CPP in 2023, but first, let's take a look at what 2024 has in store.
We know this is an important election year where issues of fairness, transparency, voter access, and accountability are sure to command our attention. We can expect to follow many stories in 2023 and beyond, including democracy, the environment, economic challenges, social services, mental health, and medical infrastructure.
